DBL: Coronial Inquest into Rooming House Fire: 29 Sept 2009

Findings from the Coronial Inquest were handed down today in the case of Leigh Sinclair and Christopher Giorgi who died when the Brunswick rooming house in which they were staying caught fire in the early hours of the morning on 1 October 2006. Five other people escaped the building with their lives. This fire and the deaths of Leigh Sinclair and Christopher Giorgi raised a raft of broader issues around rooming house regulation and the lack of safe and affordable housing which led to these preventable deaths.

DBL: Regulating Rooming Houses, 28 October 2008

Tonight on Done by Law we talk to Caroline Adler, principal lawyer at the PILCH Homeless Persons Legal Clinic. The Clinic, along with the Tenants Union of Victoria and the Council to Homeless Persons have
been granted standing to appear at the Coronial Inquest into thedeaths of Leigh Sinclair and Christopher Giorgi. Leigh and Christopher died in a rooming house fire in Sydney Road Brunswick in 2006. The inquest began on 20th October. Caroline will discuss concerns about inadequate regulation of rooming houses which will be raised by the three services at the inquest. Caroline says “It is hoped that this inquest will provide a catalyst for the Victorian government to act to prevent future deaths and to radically improve rooming house regulation, accountability and enforcement. “
